So Much to Read

More praise for manga

I admit it: my own son is a reluctant reader.  I didn’t know there was a word for him, but there it is.  He loves stories and will listen to them very happily over and over again, but it is a struggle to get him to read a book.  I learned early on that he prefers to read non-fiction when I found him reading the encyclopedia instead of one of the piled books we had chosen at the library earlier that week.  Just like reluctant readers about whom I’ve read, he (and I) has latched onto manga.  He knew I would look for Shonen Jump while out at the library yesterday, and came running downstairs calling, “What’d you get at the library?!” before tearing through the bag I brought home.  I’d still rather he read more prose, but he tore through Shonen Jump, and three mangas!  Go manga!

Go Jess and family! This is such a great example of what we talk about in this class. Giving teens the chance to read what appeals turns them into lovers of reading. Reluctant readers can still love to read it seems to me.
